Compatibilism as it was defined earlier is the view that free will and determinism are compatible. If some events can make man act in some way, man still have the free will. As an example, Linda was raised in the belief that every women must get married in their early age and raised their children, at the age of fifteen she got married and started to build her household. 2018-07-03 2011-09-15 2020-11-16 2016-11-18 Determinism vs. Free Will vs. Compatibilism: A Preliminary Bibliographic Outline (updated 4-26-2019) 2019.

Compatibilism is the belief that free will and determinism are mutually compatible and that it is possible to believe in both without being logically inconsistent. Compatibilists believe freedom can be present or absent in situations for reasons that have nothing to do with metaphysics. They say causal determinism does not exclude the truth of possible future outcomes. Similarly, political liberty is a non-metaphysical concept. Statements of political liberty, such as the United States Bill of R Compatibilism, as I see it, is more of an attempt to show how free will could (seem to) exist in a deterministic universe, than an attempt to describe a different universe to that of the hard determinists. Soft determinism (or compatibilism) is the position or view that causal determinism is true, but we still act as free, morally responsible agents when, in the absence of external constraints, our actions are caused by our desires. Compatibilism does not maintain that humans are free.

Peter’s answer is largely correct, but since he asked me to answer this question, I will do so with the intention of providing another version. We can call this the New International Version of the answer.

Compatibilism Compatibilists argue that determinism is compatible with human freedom, and that indeterminism is not compatible or at best incoherent. They feel (correctly) that there must be a deterministic or causal connection between our will and our actions.

Those who claim that determinism is false and therefore that free will is at least possible are known as metaphysical libertarians (not necessarily related to political libertarians). Those who think that determinism and free will are compatible are known as compatibilists. Incompatibilists appeal to what may seem to be a commonsense argument: Determinism holds that every event is caused in a predictable way by events before it. Free will means that we make choices from a variety of options. If those choices are actually caused by some other event beyond our control, where does freedom come in? A compatibilist would reject any notion that physical determinism impedes free will, as an event may be determined but done voluntarily.

Free will means that we make choices from a variety of options. If those choices are actually caused by some other event beyond our control, where does freedom come in? There are also, of course, many other accounts of compatibilism as well as objections to them, plus alternative theories such as hard determinism and metaphysical libertarianism.
